Story Box Rules
Quick Summary
Story Box is a story slam style event in the style of The Moth. An offshoot of the poetry slam movement, story slams are competitions where storytellers get 5 minutes to tell an extemporaneous story with no notes, props, costumes, or nudity. Stories will be judged by 5 judges who will score each story from 0.0-10.0.
Rules for presenters
What is a story? A story has a beginning, a middle, an ending, and a conflict. We aren’t looking for fiction at story slams, we’re looking for personal stories. Lived experiences. True stories. Stories must be original. We are here because we want to hear your story. Your experience.
- There is a 5 minute time limit. Stories can be shorter than 5 minutes, but after 5 minutes points will be deducted from your score. At 6 minutes, the mic will be cut.
- No Costumes. Unless otherwise specified, please refrain from wearing costumes. I know your cosplay is cool, but we want to focus on the story. Anything that you don’t regularly wear would be considered a costume. Technically, if you’re a furry and you wear your fur suit regularly, that wouldn’t be a costume. If it is traditional to your culture, it is not a costume. Tattoos, gender affirming clothing or devices, and mobility devices are not props.
- No Props. A prop is defined as anything that you have access to that other storytellers do not. Unless otherwise specified as a “show and tell” event, don’t bring your story about your lucky underpants and show off your lucky underpants. The microphone or anything already present and visible in the room is not a prop. Mobility devices are not props.
- Original stories only with no notes. The style we're looking for is extemporaneous. You can rehearse, but don't just read off of paper or perform something memorized. Go to the poetry slam for that. Tell us a story the way you'd tell your friends around a campfire or over coffee.
There are 10 slots for storytellers. Participants will write their names on a piece of paper and those names will be drawn from a hat by the host to determine who tells their story next.
There will be 3-5 judges scoring the stories 0-10 Olympic style with decimal points.
The host, or a featured storyteller, will provide the first story. The judges will score this opening story to calibrate their scores for the night. These scores are not part of the competition, but it helps give the judges a baseline.
The highest scoring storyteller will receive ¼ of all door takings for the night as a cash prize.
